The opener of the nine events had a rare close finish, with the first three past the post being separated by two short heads. Run at 6½ furlongs for $1.0 million and $800,000 claimers, it ended in victory for Wayne’s Princess at 9-2. The winning rider was apprentice Evertte Clunis for trainer Christopher Pierre.
The nine-year-old Silent Cat (5-2) was ridden to victory by apprentice Eric Haughton in the day’s second run over 7½ furlongs for $350,000 claimers. This was the first of a Haughton riding double. Declared by Davidan Robinson for its 83rd appearance, the chestnut gelding won by nearly five lengths over eight-year-old Colorado Ranger (3-1) to secure career win number seven.
Lightly raced Super David (5-2), having his first run since finishing last of 11 by 34 lengths in the 2000 Guineas on June 07, recovered well enough to score by just under three lengths. Saddled by David Powell for the four-furlong dash of race three, Super David was partnered by Demar Williams in the Restricted Allowance II for three-year-olds with less than two wins.
Only fancied to the tune of 18-1, Family Feud sprinted to a victory margin of two lengths and a quarter in race three, run over the five-furlong straight course. Ridden by Emelio McLean, Family Feud was well prepared and presented by trainer Winston Morris for the Restricted Allowance IV event for horses four years and older with fewer than three wins.
Race five, restricted to maidens four years and older, ended in victory for Hoofy Dee, declared by owner Donwell Dawes for the three-length victory margin over the 5 ½ furlongs gallop. Interestingly, with apprentice Haughton closing a double, it made a clean sweep of these first five races by 2024 graduates of the Jamaica Racing Commission Riding School (JRCRS).
Four-time champion and leading conditioner Jason DaCosta saddled three fillies in the sex restricted Maiden Condition sixth event. Tevin Foster, the leading reinsman in the current season, was aboard Wrapper Girl (3-1), the winner by 6 ½ lengths. From the DaCosta camp, Little Truth, the even-money favourite, was third, while Everything Kriss (5-1) was fifth of the 10 starters.
Runaway Star, the favourite at odds of 1-5, came under starters but refused to race. Super Storm (5-1), guided by Jahiem Anderson, resumed the success of the members of the JRCRS cohort. The Phillip Lee-conditioned colt dominated the early fractions and scored by just over five lengths in the Restricted Allowance V seven-furlong contest for four-year-olds and upwards.
Featured on the programme was another renewal of the 7 1/2-furlong Typewriter Trophy for Overnight Allowance campaigner, staged as race eight. The Prince’s Spur (USA), saddled by Rohan Crichton, who is also a part owner, duly justified its 1-5 favourite status with a romp of over 14 lengths, with former two-time champion reinsman Raddesh Roman intervening only in the schooling process for the bigger prizes ahead.
The Restricted Allowance V event for five-year-olds and upwards, non-winners of two races, was won in good style by the Patrick Taylor-declared C W Treasure (9-1). The five-year-old chestnut mare, a progeny of Bridled Quest, skated in by nearly six lengths. Winning apprentice Tyrese Anderson made it seven of nine races on the day, going 2024 JRCRS graduates.
