The Port Royal Sprint, one of the marquee events on the Jamaica Cup race day, is designated for three-year-old and upward horses at the Grade One level going six furlongs. This signal event has attracted eight prime starters, with The Quick Galloper’s comprehensive breakdown and analysis of the field provided below in draw order.
1 – NAUTICAL STAR
Delivered an inspiring performance on June 27 in a bold front-running effort travelling a mile in a fast clocking of 1:35.3. Returned over the same trip on July 25 and was thoroughly outpaced by Phenomenal Power. With the latter present again with no significant change in the handicaps, Nautical Star’s winning prospects are visibly reduced. Nevertheless, he has been training well coming into this call and should be right there fighting to hit the board.
2 – PACK PLAYS
Enters the Port Royal in sharp, dependable form as a consistent campaigner at the top level. Pack Plays' last success was achieved impressively on August 15 over this exact six-furlong trip, stopping the clock in a swift 1:10.3. A natural pace-setter who will undoubtedly be prominent on the front end, Pack Plays cannot be allowed to dictate terms alone without facing a serious challenge. He is a major player who has to be watched very closely.
3 – SUPREMASI
A seasoned and proven Overnight Allowance campaigner, Supremasi always finds the going extremely tough when stepping up to test his mettle against the elite leading group in top-tier company. While game and consistent in his own grade, he will need to find considerable improvement to trouble the principals here.
4 – PEPPER STEPPER
Pepper Stepper is firmly on the rise after triumphant efforts first time out in Overnight company and subsequently stepping up into Open Allowance. That notable win in Open Allowance going 6 ½ furlongs marked the first occasion this runner competed over a distance longer than 5 ½ furlongs. An out-and-out speedster who now faces the toughest assignment of his career, this represents a major, defining test for the talented US-bred.
5 – PHENOMENAL POWER
Fresh off a stellar victory in the Diamond Mile on July 25, just 21 days after setting the 7 ½ furlong track record with a dazzling time of 1:29.0, Phenomenal Power is widely regarded as the division's rising star. He boasts an imposing record of five wins from seven career starts. While he naturally prefers to lead (which might generate a fierce pace battle over the first three furlongs or so), he can be rated just off the pace and strike decisively when ready. He is the clear horse to beat.
6 – DESERT OF MALIBU
Now getting on in years at age seven, Desert of Malibu unfortunately had a turbulent prep, getting disqualified for the third time in her 25-race career on September 19. She is another contender who prefers to dictate terms on the lead, which will prove a formidable task against this high-class field. Though proven and classy on her day, taking on younger, sharper opponents means she will have to produce a career-best effort to feature.
7 – DOTHRAKI
A notoriously tricky runner to assess and analyze accurately. Dothraki is fundamentally a sprinter, but on August 1 he raced closer to the pace before running on effectively to conquer an ordinary field. Against this elite grade, a repeat of that tactical versatility will be demanded, and realistic expectations suggest the best Dothraki can hope for is fighting for a minor top-four finish.
8 – OF A REVOLUTION
Has faced off against several elite rivals in this field—including Pack Plays, Phenomenal Power, and Pepper Stepper—and has been firmly held by them in recent endeavours. To turn the tables and capture a race of this magnitude, he will have to run way above his established best.
