KINGSTON, Jamaica – “The death of my first Derby winner, Calculus, is a great loss for the connections, and by extension, the entire stables. He has been one of our primary assets over the last three years or so,” said trainer Gary Subratie in an interview with Quickgallop.com following the death of his champion stayer last Friday night (June 16, 2023).
Subratie explained that Calculus was having some niggling problems, which have hampered his performance since the start of this year.
“Calculus has had a problematic time in 2023, mainly because of issues with splits. He went away while we were trying to solve those maladies. A suh it go! But that is life, and all I can say is, he was an absolute pleasure training Calculus, my first winner of the Derby.
“The first two times he raced under my care was in the St Leger and then the Derby, which he both won. That I will never be able to forget,” Subratie said.
Calculus died as a five-year-old bay horse by Sensational Slam out of Trinket Box. He ended his racing career with impressive statistics.
He raced 31 times, winning 11 of those races, with career earnings of approximately $17,000, 000.
