Brilliant jockeyship by Shane Ellis rewards Calculus with Derby victory, first win for trainer Gary Subratie

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The connections of Calculus, owner Chevan Maharaj, trainer Gary Subratie and groom Lyndel Bennett must say a big thank you to the brilliance and mastery of jockey Shane Ellis for the win in the 101^st staging of the 12-furlong Jamaica Derby.

When the gates opened Calculus was off to a good start but was hampered by traffic problems when passing the stands for the first time. Ellis had to apply all his strength to keep Calculus on his hoofs as the going got rough.

The early leader was Iannai Links (Phillip Parchment) with Ellis keeping Calculus on the rails while Billy Whizz (Dick Cardenas) and Further and Beyond (Dane Nelson) were close to the leading duo.

Iannai Links’ run petered out with four furlongs to go as Nelson made his move on Further and Beyond, so too Calculus as Big Jule (Omar Walker) came on the scene. Billy Whizz at this stage was fourth.

Further and Beyond entered the straight with the lead tracked by Big Jule, with Calculus in third and Billy Whizz accelerating on the outside.

It was a ding dong tussle in the last furlong as Further and Beyond was challenged first by Billy Whizz who went by and someway, somehow, Ellis got another surge from Calculus who split horses to beat Billy Whizz by a neck with Further and Beyond third.
