The second race on the 10-race card of Saturday, December 13, brings together eight promising two-year-olds over seven furlongs in the annual renewal of the Abbie Grannum Memorial Cup.
Juveniles at this stage are still learning their craft, and this year’s field offers a mix of seasoned campaigners, lightly raced prospects, and a debutante. Below is an assessment of their chances:
1 – BLYTHWOOD
- The most experienced of the lot, with four starts already under his belt.
- Has consistently hit the board but has struggled to threaten the winners, often finishing well behind.
- Notably, Blythwood is one of the few offspring of a locally bred stallion currently competing, which adds intrigue to his profile.
- Racing without the visor this time, he is expected to grind his way into the placings once again, though a win may be a stretch.
2 – SENOR BISCOTTI
- Three starts so far, showing a clear preference for coming from off the pace.
- His last effort over six furlongs saw him running on strongly to secure fourth place.
- The added furlong should play right into his strengths, giving him more time to deliver his late kick.
- A colt to keep a close eye on, as improvement is likely with distance and maturity.
3 – PROSPERITY SEN
- Only one start to date, on October 19, which was underwhelming.
- The tongue tie is now applied.
- Still raw and in need of seasoning, Prosperity Sen looks unlikely to trouble the principals at this stage.
4 – BIGGER BOSS
- Debuted on November 16, where he finished a close second to Tia Maria, beaten just a length after running on late.
- That effort suggested natural ability and determination.
- Returns now with first-time Lasix, which could sharpen his performance further.
- Having gained valuable race experience, Bigger Boss shapes as a serious contender and should be right there when the race is decided.
5 – THE CHEF MASTER
- Races with both visor and figure-eight applied.
- His performances so far suggest he is still learning and needs more time to develop before becoming competitive.
- A work in progress.
6 – LONDON SPIRIT
- A full brother to the accomplished Blue Vinyl, which makes him one of the more interesting entrants.
- Well-supported on debut (November 29), but failed to deliver for his backers.
- Connections will be expecting a much-improved effort second time out, and pedigree suggests he has the tools to succeed.
- A live danger if he takes the expected step forward.
7 – BLOOD DIAMOND
- This bay filly made her first appearance on November 29 but offered little of note.
- Clearly in need of more time and experience before she can be competitive.
- Likely to struggle against stronger, more seasoned rivals in this field.
8 – WE JAMMIN
- A chestnut colt making his debut in this demanding seven-furlong test.
- Exercise reports indicate promise, though he is expected to need time to find his rhythm. .
- While a win on debut may be ambitious, he could show flashes of ability that mark him as one to follow in the future.
THE QUICK GALLOPER’S VERDICT
Bigger Boss appears poised to make a bold bid with Lasix added, while London Spirit could rebound strongly after a disappointing debut. Senor Biscotti is another who will relish the longer trip and could surprise late. The rest, including Blythwood, may fight for minor placings, while the debutante will be looking to gain valuable experience.
