Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley issued the following statement following the announcement of jockey Patrick Husbands’ retirement.
Today, Barbados pauses to salute one of its finest sons, Patrick Husbands, on his retirement. Patrick has ridden horses and he has ridden into history.
From the Garrison Savannah to Woodbine, and on many tracks beyond, he carried with him the confidence, discipline, courage and unmistakable spirit of Barbados. In a sport where split seconds
matter, where instinct and judgement must become one, Patrick gave the world a masterclass in talent, temperament and trust. He had the hands, the eye, the balance, the timing and the heart. In
every great ride, he reminded us that excellence is not accidental; it is prepared for, sacrificed for, and earned.
For many Barbadians, horse racing is not simply a sport. It is a lifestyle. It is Saturday at the races. It is the anticipation at the Garrison. It is the thunder of hooves, the colour of the silks, the voice of
the crowd, the pride of a winning ride. It is the Gold Cup, an event that has stood the test of time and remains one of the great racing occasions of this region and, indeed, of the world.
For Patrick Husbands to have been such a major name in that world is no small thing. It places him firmly among the great sporting icons of Barbados and the Caribbean.
His story is also a Barbadian story in the truest sense. He went out into the world and conquered, but he never lost the essence of who he was. He remained uniquely Barbadian in his manner, in his
speech, in his humility, in his humour, in the way he carried himself, and in the quiet dignity with which he represented this nation. He is, in every sense, a global citizen with Barbadian roots.
That is what we mean when we speak about Barbadian excellence. Not only that our people can go anywhere in the world and compete, but that they can go anywhere in the world and belong, lead, inspire, and still remain grounded in the soil that first formed them.
Patrick’s talent excited us. His discipline inspired us. His journey lifted multiple generations. There are children who watched him and believed that they too could be great, and there are racing fans who will forever remember where they were when he produced one of those unforgettable rides.
I have had the pleasure of calling Patrick my friend. I have watched him move through different stages of his life and career with resilience, grace and a deep respect for the sport that gave him so much, and to which he gave even more. The measure of Patrick is not only in the races he won, but in the way he won them.
Knowing Patrick, retirement will not mean staying still. It may simply mean that the kitchen now gets a little more of his time. Those of us who have had the pleasure of seeing that side of him may now have to prepare ourselves for even more proud updates and photos from the chef himself.
His career is already immortalised. Every fan will have a favourite Patrick Husbands ride. Every racing family will have a memory. Every Barbadian who understands what he has achieved will know that his name now belongs to our folklore.
On behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Patrick Husbands on an extraordinary career. We thank him for the joy, the pride, the inspiration and the example.
