KINGSTON, Jamaica - On Saturday, November 4, 2023, Atlantic Convoy's local success continued as the three-year-old Canadian-bred chestnut colt achieved its third win from seven starts.
Running with a tongue-tie for the first time, Atlantic Convoy outpaced its rivals in an imported three-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of three) category and native-bred three and four-year-olds, covering one mile.
Patrick Lynch trained the horse, while Reyan Lewis rode it to victory by three-quarters of a length in a time of 1:40.2 (23.4 x 45.4 x 1:12.1).
"It was an impressive performance by Atlantic Convoy, and I'm pleased with the result. This is a strong horse," Lewis said.
"The strategy was to secure a solid break, choose my position, and encourage him to run when I felt comfortable. Once we were in the lead at the home turn, I knew we would win," he added.
Most runners in the eight-horse field had a strong start, with Antarctica (Javaniel Patterson) leading ahead of Strike Smart (Samantha Fletcher) at the 7-furlong (1,400m) junction.
Strike Smart took over at the 6-furlong (1,200m) mark as Antarctica fell behind, while Atlantic Convoy made progress on the inside rails.
Approaching the half-mile (800m) mark, Atlantic Convoy seized the lead and widened the gap on rivals around the bend.
Heading for home, Atlantic Convoy met a challenge from Money Miser (Dane Dawkins) but fought valiantly in deep stretch for a narrow victory at the finish line. Rhythm Buzz (Youville Pinnock) came in second, and Money Miser secured third place.
