KINGSTON, Jamaica - Following Oneofakind’s expected romp of the $1.14-million Errol “Big Sub” Subratie Memorial Trophy on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at Caymanas Park, trainer Anthony “Baba” Nunes says it should be smooth sailing for his five-year-old chestnut horse heading into the Jamaica Cup scheduled for November 13 over 9 ½ furlongs (1,900m).
Oneofakind, the 1-9 favourite, won the Non-Restricted Overnight Allowance for three-year-olds and up by 5 1/2 lengths clocking a smooth time of 1:39.3 in the one-mile (1,600m) event.
“I thought he ran really well coming off the layoff behind a really good horse in Runaway Algo last time, and like many others, I thought that if he came back in the same frame of mind, he should win, and he really did that. Hopefully, this is a stepping stone towards the Jamaica Cup on November 13 and it is against the big girl Atomica and other big boys,” Nunes pointed out in his post-race interview.
“We are hoping that Oneofakind will be able to get into the Mouttet Mile as well. I don’t know how he is with earnings, but we are hoping,” Nunes said.
Ridden by Reyan Lewis, Oneofakind settled just off the pace down the backstretch behind Sir John (Chris Mamdeen), Big Big Daddy (Dane Dawkins), and Bern Notice (Tevin Foster). As Big Big Daddy took over the lead navigating the half-mile turn, Lewis wasted no time in sending Oneofakind after the new leader.
With the momentum going his way, Oneofakind hit the front full of running at the top of the lane and went on to win easily at the line on a common canter. Big Big Daddy finished in second place, with Marquesas (Shane Richardson) taking third place.
