KINGSTON, Jamaica – Five-year-old bay gelding Valiant after 16 tries earned his first visit to the winners’ enclosure in the Caymanas Saturday (June 18, 2022) opener for trainer | owner Derrick Roman and jockey Romario Spencer.
The Caymanas Saturday (June 18) first was a five-year-old and upwards maiden condition contest going six furlongs.
It was Galway Bay (Everton Miller) who set the early splits followed by Euphoria (Hakeem Pottinger) and the 2-1 favourite Hunter’s Ridge (Jawani Forbes). At this early-stage, Spencer had Valiant in mid-pack about eight to ten lengths behind the leading bunch.
While rounding the bend, Hunter’s Ridge pushed ahead to establish a clear advantage as the horses entered the straight for the final two-furlong push. Hunter’s Ridge started to fade with a furlong to go as first Plutologist (Devon A Thomas) challenged and then Spencer brought Valiant through the field to win by 1 ¼ lengths. Dr Sahir Alexander (Ramon Nepare), a 60- chance ran on strongly on the outside to snatch second with Plutologist third.
The exacta paid $14,193, and the quinella $19,956.
