KINGSTON, Jamaica – Word is currently circulating that some sort of deal has been brokered for a restart of local racing.
While the details of any deal have not been made known as yet, Quickgallop.com explores the timeline for the running of the Classic races. Added to the mix also are the two major prep races for the Classics, the Thornbird and the Prince Consort Stakes. The Governor’s Cup, the Gold Cup and the Superstakes are also taken in this calendar consideration.
THE CLASSIC RACES
There are five Classic races in Jamaica and all are for three-year-olds. In running order these races are as follows:
1 – The 1000 Guineas – fillies only – one mile
2 – The 2000 Guineas – colt and geldings only – one mile
The 1000 and 2000 are usually run on the same day or a day or two apart.
3 – The Jamaica Oaks – fillies only – 10 furlongs
4 – The Jamaica Derby – 12 furlongs
5 – The Jamaica St Leger – 10 furlongs
SCHEDULE FOR 2020 CLASSIC RACES
This schedule is based on the presumption that races will return on Saturday, June 6, 2020.
Prince Consort and Thornbird Stakes – Saturday, June 27, 2020.
1000 and 2000 Guineas – Saturday, July 18, 2020.
Jamaica Oaks - Saturday, August 15, 2020.
Governor’s Cup – Saturday, September 5, 2020.
Jamaica Derby – Saturday, October 3, 2020.
Jamaica St Leger – Saturday, October 31, 2020.
BEYOND THE CLASSICS
There are other major races to look at including the Gold Cup and the Superstakes. There will be no Diamond Mile this year.
Superstakes – 10 furlongs – Saturday, November 28, 2020.
Gold Cup – 7 furlongs – Saturday, December 19, 2020.
THE CARIBBEAN CLASSIC
This race was last run at Gulfstream Park in Florida, USA last December and caters for Caribbean and Latin American horses. Last year Jamaica participated in this race.
This Classic schedule of races makes the presumption that no Jamaican horse (s) will participate this year.
