Jockey Calvin Bailey – Horse Racing’s Heartbreak Kid

Horse racing, for all its glory, is an unforgiving sport. The margins are cruel, the conditions unpredictable, and fate often plays its hand with merciless precision.

Few know this better than Calvin Bailey, whose 2026 season has been defined not by triumph, but by heartbreak that touched the racing public deeply.

On Thursday, August 6, in the Jamaica Derby, Bailey aboard Maverick delivered what racing commentator aptly described as “the surprise of the party.”

With a furlong to go, Maverick looked every inch the winner, Bailey’s hands steady, his mount responding with courage. Yet, in the final strides, London Spirit under Tevin Foster stormed home to snatch victory by the narrowest of margins — a nose.

For Bailey, who had not tasted success all year, the defeat was devastating. The sight of him returning to be weighed in, crestfallen, resonated with fans. Sympathy poured in, not only from those at Caymanas Park but across social media. The racing public felt his pain, recognising the effort, the near‑glory, and the cruel twist of fate that denied him.

Then came Saturday, August 15. The opening race of the day carried a special condition: only jockeys who had not won since February 15 could ride. It was a race designed to give the winless a chance at redemption. Nine horses lined up, Bailey partnering the 3‑1 shot Starlight Princess for trainer Omar Williams.

From the off, Bailey rode with quiet determination. Starlight Princess tracked the leader, poised in second, before surging to the front entering the straight. With a furlong and a half left, the crowd sensed it, Bailey was finally about to break the drought. The maiden tag was about to be shed, the burden lifted.

But racing fate, once again, was merciless. The even‑money favourite Dreamer, guided by Kerry‑Gayl Robinson, began to close. The two horses battled stride for stride, hearts pounding, hopes rising. In the final hop, Dreamer edged ahead by a head, denying Bailey yet again.

For Robinson it was only his tenth ride in 2026, with a single third place finish being the highlight.
