After a 154-day layoff, US-bred bay horse Goodbye Firefly returned to competition with a commanding performance, stepping up to the Overnight Allowance grade for the first time over five furlongs straight on Saturday, March 21, 2026
Drawn on the advantageous outside and partnered by Tajay Suckoo for trainer Spencer Chung, Goodbye Firefly broke sharply and set a strong tempo down the chute. She was pressed early by Unbelievable Force (Ian Spence) and later faced a late surge from Another One (Raddesh Roman) in the final furlong and a half. Suckoo, however, remained composed and guided his mount to a decisive one-length victory. Another One finished second, with Unbelievable Force third. The winning time was a swift 57.0 seconds, with splits of 23.0 x 45.1.
Trainer Chung expressed satisfaction after the race, noting the challenges in managing Goodbye Firefly’s training routine:
“Goodbye Firefly is a talented horse who requires a lot of care. We have to be very careful with him, as he cannot handle strong gallops on the track. Instead, we rely mainly on swimming, but since the pool has been unavailable, we’ve had to take hin to the sea. Not the ideal situation, but we’ve worked with it. I’m very pleased with this winning effort.”
