After finishing second among claiming horses, Smart Trick struggled when returning to Overnight company. That pattern is expected to continue, leaving him with little chance of significantly impacting the outcome.
2 – DON KWESI
A late developer who has progressed nicely through age-group conditions. Now facing older, seasoned rivals for the first time, Don Kwesi may find this level demanding. A minor placing is his most realistic target.
3 – OIL MACHINE
A gritty winner in this grade 18 days ago over 7 ½ furlongs. His form was boosted when Mack And Rome, runner-up to him, scored next time out. Oil Machine is consistent and cannot be overlooked for another strong showing.
4 – WALL STREET TRADER
Beaten by Nautical Star on January 17, but this assignment looks less daunting. With five wins from 21 starts, Wall Street Trader has proven quality, and the distance is ideal. He shapes as the horse to beat.
5 – MINIATURE MAN
Once a dominant force in his prime, Miniature Man is now eight years old. Though he finished third at this level 67 days ago, age appears to have caught up with him. Unlikely to match strides with younger rivals.
6 – FEARLESS SOUL
Recent form has been poor, and even without blinkers, Fearless Soul does not inspire confidence. Hard to recommend for serious consideration.
7 – SENSATIONAL SOUL
Winner of last year’s 2000 Guineas, he returned to the winner’s circle for the first time since that Classic success on February 7 over 7 ½ furlongs. A strong-finishing type who thrives off a fast pace, Sensational Soul is dangerous if the race sets up for closers. A solid option for exotic wagers.
8 – INSPIRE FORCE
Has disappointed in recent efforts. Even with blinkers removed, Inspire Force looks unlikely to feature prominently.
9 – CALIFORNIA GOLD
Reached Overnight level respectably, but has not shown enough to suggest he can progress further.
10 – SUPREMASI
The model of consistency at this level. Supremasi has been competing against some of the best horses in training and holding his own. With the champion jockey back aboard, he has an excellent chance to secure career win number six.
11 – WICKED CASSIE
This imported runner has done well to reach Overnight Allowance but lacks the credentials to threaten here. Blinkers off, but expectations remain low.
12 – ALLEGIANCE
Has failed to make an impression in Overnight company, and no improvement is anticipated.
13 – UNRULY MO
Recent performances have been uninspiring. Difficult to see him playing a role in the finish.
14 – BULLETPROOFCOFFEE
Has adjusted well to Overnight Allowance but has been racing primarily over shorter trips, confined to the straight course. The 6 ½ furlongs may stretch her stamina, making this a tough assignment.
The Ash Wednesday Trophy brings together a diverse field, but the likely outcome revolves around a few key contenders. Wall Street Trader (4) stands out as the horse to beat, with proven class and suitability to the distance. Supremasi (10), with his consistency and the champion jockey in the saddle, is a major threat and could well land the prize. Oil Machine (3) deserves respect for his recent form, while Sensational Soul (7) is the dark horse, capable of swooping late if the pace is strong.
