KINGSTON, Jamaica – The eighth race on Saturday, December 23, 2023, features the Christopher Armond Memorial Sprint Trophy, covering 5 ½ furlongs.
Below is The Quick Galloper's assessment of the six contestants in post-position order:
1 – EMPEROROFTHECATS has an impressive record with nine wins, one second place, and three thirds from 19 starts despite health issues. Only 13 days after a long break, this four-year-old gelding outperformed an Overnight Allowance rival at six furlongs. The shorter distance of 5 ½ furlongs suits him well. He may not lead but can follow the pace and strike in the lane. Emperorofthecats is a contender.
2 – FREEDOM STREET has performed well lately; however, despite the low weight (101 lb), facing these opponents will be challenging.
3 – SHE’S MY DESTINY, as last year's champion in the Chris Armond race, partners with jockey Omar Walker for a potential cup race repeat. This five-year-old mare carries significant weight and shows her class with versatile racing styles. She’s My Destiny has the class, as she does not have to lead, having shown that new versatility in the recent 7-furlong Gold Cup. She cannot put a hoof wrong. Don't count her out.
4 – MADELYN’S SUNSHINE is the fastest horse in this feature race. Weighing just 106 lb and ridden by a skilled apprentice, this foreign-bred filly could take an early lead and prove difficult to catch.
5 – AMERICAN TAP began her local career with a straight victory but disappointed in the Mouttet Mile. Refreshed for this event and given a more favourable distance, she should not be overlooked.
6 – LUKSOL will be racing outside of her class bracket.
