KINGSTON, Jamaica – The 2019 Jamaica Oaks now has a new sponsor.
Hampden Estate based in the parish of Trelawny through its brand product, Rum Fire Overproof Rum is the new sponsor.
The company which is operated by one of horse racing’s top families, the Husseys, is spending $1 million for the sponsorship of the Oaks which will now be named, the Rum Fire Jamaica Oaks.
The Hussey family includes Ruth, a former champion owner, Charles – a former champion jockey and Percy – a trainer. Laurie, the now deceased patriarch of the Hussey family was also a trainer.
Two of the races on the day will be named after Laurie and Ruth.
The Jamaica Oaks is a Classic event for fillies only and is run over 10-furlongs or 2,000 metres. This year the Oaks which is traditionally ‘Ladies Day’ at the track will be run on Saturday, May 4.
The overwhelming morning line favourite is the Anthony Nunes trained 1000 Guineas winner, I Am Di One.
At the launch of the Rum Fire sponsorship earlier this week, Christelle Harris a director at Hampden Estate, said that her company is pleased to be on board for the Jamaica Oaks and to be united with horse racing itself.
Harris is the granddaughter of Ruth and the niece of Charles and Percy.
