KINGSTON, Jamaica – In 2021, The Portmore, a Grade 2 event for fillies only (7 ½ furlongs) was introduced as part of the preparation races for the Classic series.
THE QUICK GALLOPER relives the moment of the first The Portmore to find out how the participants have feared since. This report is done in the order the horses finished.
FIRST: She’s A Wonder - In The Portmore, She’s A Wonder continued her relentless march to Classic glory with follow-up wins in the 1000 Guineas (one mile), and the Jamaica Oaks (10 furlongs). Yet this talented filly trained by Ian Parsard has done little since. She’s A Wonder has not raced in 2022, with the good news being that she is exercising in the mornings and seems set to make her re-entry to competitive racing soon. Jockey Reyan Lewis.
SECOND: Sensational Ending – This filly ran her best race in The Portmore, but since then her development has been hampered by injuries. After a long period of rehabilitation, Sensational Ending made her return about two months and won on her re-entry. Since then, Sensational Ending has been hanging around at the four-year-old non-three level.
THIRD: Secret Identity – Trained by Tensang Chung, Secret Identity has had injury issues yet she has been able to go through the classes and is now operating in Open Allowance. This is a talented filly, from which much more is expected.
FOURTH: Amy The Butcher – Thereabouts, especially among the fillies. Injuries have derailed her career but came back with a bang just three weeks ago having been sold and changing stables to be now conditioned by champion Anthony Nunes. Amy The Butcher will go through her conditions and reach Overnight with little fuss.
FIFTH: Heavenly Glitter – Has done nothing of worth since.
SIXTH: Ianzha Links – Has done little since.
SEVENTH: Action Ann – This filly, like many others, career advancement has been hampered by injuries. Recently operating under the care of Patrick Lynch, Action Ann has seemingly hit a new wave with a rambunctious victory, which has rejuvenated her career. There is no doubt that Action Ann is talented and if she stays fit will win more races.
EIGHTH: Three Times Lucky – Has been battering around in claiming races and runs on Saturday (May 7) in Overnight Allowance. Three Times Lucky, more than likely will have some difficulty winning in Overnight, amay return to the claiming ranks.
NINTH: Sweet Majesty – Has done nothing since.
TENTH: Awesome Choice – Did not finish this race and has done nothing of worth since.
