KINGSTON, Jamaica – SPECIAL NOTES by the QUICK GALLOPER are to bring to the attention of readers on this site some of the odds and ends on a given race day. The featured race day is Saturday, April 9, 2022.
– Eighty-four horses were nominated on the day and to the surprise of THE QUICK GALLOPER, there were no late non-starters. No early late non-starters were announced, and miraculously no horse was eliminated at the gates. Well done to all.
– Former and the present champion jockeys won seven of the 10 races. Reigning champion Anthony Thomas, who has been relatively quiet this season, sprung to life, winning four races, with one each for former champions Omar Walker, Dane Nelson, and Shane Ellis. The other winning jockeys were Raddesh Roman, Paul Francis, and Javaniel Patterson, meaning that no apprentice managed to win a race on Saturday, April 9.
– The big barn trainers dominated the day with Jason DaCosta leading the way with three winners. There were wins also for champion Anthony Nunes, Gary Subratie, Patrick Lynch, and Ian Parsard. That is seven races for the current leading trainers.
– The longest odds winner was Berning Red who went off surprisingly at 11-1. Berning Red, a three-year-old, was racing for the first time in a claiming contest.
– The race day of Saturday, April 9, can rightly be called, the “day of favourites”, especially odds-on favourites. Five odds-on were victorious with the shortest price winner being Sudden Flight at 1-9. Overall, the longest shot among the winning favourites was JJ Warrior at 6-5.
