KINGSTON, Jamaica – This year’s Derby and St Leger winner Calculus after two non-performing efforts returned with a performance of excellence to win the Caymanas Saturday eighth which was the 47th running of the Gold Cup. The Gold Cup was for horses in the Open Allowance/Graded Stakes grouping at seven furlongs.
With the late withdrawal of ante-post favourite Mahogany, it was left to the lightly weighted Further and Beyond (Chris Mamdeen) and King Arthur (Anthony Thomas) to vie for the lead with the former holding the advantage.
Then after about 2 ½ furlongs were completed Mamdeen started to sit straight-up in the saddle with his feet outside of the irons. Nevertheless Further and Beyond kept on going as King Arthur was unable to pass despite the malfunction. Calculus (Paul Francis) better known for his two turn exploits was surprisingly early and was gaining on the leader.
In the lane for the final push, Further and Beyond was still running his heart out but now Francis had the Gary Subratie trainee in full drive as Calculus pounced on the outside. In the last half-a-furlong Calculus was at his top end, pulling away to win by 3 ¼ lengths.
Finishing third was Rojorn Di Pilot (Dick Cardenas).
