The Sir Howard Stakes, the second of the major preparation races leading into the prestigious three-year-old Classic events, was staged on Saturday, March 21.
Restricted to colts and geldings only, ten horses faced the starter in what has become a key early test of form and potential. Though still early in the season, the Sir Howard, named in honour of one of the better thoroughbreds to race at Caymanas Park, offers a valuable preview of what may unfold in the coming months.
The Quick Galloper has carefully reviewed the results of the Sir Howard Stakes, presented below in order of finish.
1 – SALUTE THE DON
Salute The Don made his seasonal debut in the Sir Howard Stakes, following a strong second-place finish in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes on Boxing Day 2025. His performance in the Sir Howard was one of commanding authority. Breaking sharply, he went straight to the lead, settled comfortably down the backstretch, and then shifted gears at the furlong marker. With a decisive increase in tempo, he powered home by an emphatic 9 ½ lengths in a time of 1:13.4. This was not just a victory, it was a statement. Salute The Don has set a new benchmark among the three-year-olds, particularly the colts and geldings, and he now points directly toward the upcoming Classics.
2 – SO LUCKY AM I
At odds of 19-1, So Lucky Am I was largely overlooked by punters, but he emerged as the surprise package of the race. Having previously won over five furlongs straight, he raced prominently behind Salute The Don and showed resilience in the final two furlongs. Despite the pressure from the chasing pack, he held firm to secure second place. This was a progressive effort, and while he remains unproven at the highest level, he has signalled potential. The challenge now is consistency, he must follow up with another strong performance to confirm his upward trajectory.
3 – MOHANLAL
Mohanlal raced within striking distance of the leaders and stayed on to finish third. His effort was honest but lacked the spark of a future Classic contender. While he showed determination, the performance suggested he will need significant improvement to be a force in the division. Development in both speed and stamina will be essential if he is to progress.
4 – DASHALLDAY
The second favourite behind Salute The Don, Dashallday entered the race with a reputation for speed from his two prior outings. However, he failed to deliver. Slowly out of the gates, he trailed the field early, only beginning to make headway around the turn. Though he ran on in the straight, he never threatened the winner. This was a disappointing effort, but given his prior form, The Quick Galloper is willing to overlook this run. A rebound in his next start will be crucial to restore confidence.
5 – UNCLE NALLY
Uncle Nally raced in mid-pack and attempted to rally in the straight but lacked the finishing power to make an impact. His effort was workmanlike but uninspiring. To be competitive in the Classic prep races, he will need to show marked improvement in both tactical positioning and closing speed.
6 – GOD’S PLAN
God’s Plan earned a minor placing but was never a factor in the race. He lacked the sharpness to challenge the leaders and will need to find more if he is to progress beyond being a participant.
7 – FIDELITY
Fidelity once again displayed his habitual gate issues, which compromised his chances from the start. After breaking poorly, he was a complete non-factor throughout. His regression is evident, and unless corrected, he risks falling further behind his peers.
8 – DARWIN
Darwin was never in contention at any stage of the Sir Howard. His lack of presence raises questions about his readiness for this level of competition.
9 – LONDON SPIRIT
London Spirit’s race was undone at the start. A poor jump left him struggling to recover, and he never found rhythm. The performance was underwhelming, and he will need a sharp turnaround to re-enter the conversation.
10 – MANOLETTI MAJESTIC
Manoletti Majestic raced close to the leaders and entered the straight in a promising position. However, he faded abruptly and was completely out of the reckoning by the finish. This sudden drop-off suggests something may have gone amiss, and connections will likely investigate further.
