KINGSTON, Jamaica - World Veterinary Day will be celebrated on Saturday, April 30, 2022. Two vets Dr Grace McDonnough Lyon and Dr John Masterton will be honoured for their contribution to the sport of horse racing over many years.
A competitive 11-race card has been assembled on the day, including the main race of interest which is the World Veterinary Day Trophy – a three-year-old and upwards Overnight Allowance call over one mile.
The nine horses (in post-position order) entered are looked at to determine their chances of winning.
1 - SENTIENT is a six-year-old chestnut horse by Strikewhileitshot out of Lady Geetadeo, trained by Gary Subratie with Anthony Thomas in the saddle. This former top-grade competitor is finding it difficult in recent times to find his true self. Yet, if back class is taken into consideration, Sentient can easily take care of these. It is a wait-and-see game as to which Sentient will turn up.
2 - LOOSE BALL is a five-year-old dark bay gelding by Fearless Vision out of My Friend Lucy, trained by Arnold Rambally with Javaniel Patterson in the saddle. This gelding has been trying his best in this grouping without much success. That trend will continue.
3 - ATLANTIC BLUE is a seven-year-old chestnut horse by Strikewhileitshot out of Luvable, trained by Gary Subratie with Paul Francis in the saddle. Getting to know this class but cannot deal with these as yet.
4 - GAMBLER is a five-year-old bay mare by Freedom for Jante out of Kennisha, trained by Michael Marlowe with Nicholas Hibbert. Gambler did well when finishing third on March 19, behind Curlin’s Affair and Rum With Me. Gambler faces Curlin’s Affair once more, which should make his chances of winning difficult.
5 - SPARKLE DIAMOND (USA) is a six-year-old chestnut horse by Include out of Myntz Connection, trained by Anthony Nunes with Linton Steadman in the saddle. Sparkle Diamond comes down in class and is now making his return to Overnight Allowance. Last year, Sparkle Diamond beat I’m Fred, who he meets again at about the same handicaps. Sparkle Diamond, therefore, cannot be ruled out of contention.
6 - HELICOPTER is a five-year-old bay gelding by Storm Craft – Face Tracker, trained by Gordon Lewis with Shane Richardson in the saddle. Helicopter cannot deal with these just yet.
7 - RAW LIQUID is a six-year-old bay horse by Liquidity out of Good Investment, trained by Maurice Crooks with Youville Pinnock. Raw Liquid seems to have developed a new liking for racing. Usually racing as a sprinter, Raw Liquid did really well on April 16, when he finished 4 ¼ lengths third behind winner Hover Craft and Supreme Soul going the two turns of nine furlongs and 25 yards. In that race, at the top of the straight, Raw Liquid was in front making the one mile of this trophy race more to his liking, plus Raw Liquid is going seven pounds lighter. He cannot be ruled out.
8 - I AM FRED is a four-year-old bay gelding (USA) by Golden Lad out of Happy Hailey trained by Jason DaCosta with Phillip Parchment in the saddle. Coming off a four-month break last week, I’m Fred ran an encouraging race to finish a length and quarter in third place behind Runaway Algo and Mahogany in the Easter Sprint Cup over 5 ½ furlongs on April 18. With the distance increased, I Am Fred is better off, and with him continuing to show up at exercise, he is poised to  go one better.
9 - CURLIN’S AFFAIR is a four-year-old chestnut colt by Perfect Curlin out of Nuclear Affair, trained by Anthony Nunes with Robert Halledeen in the saddle. – Ran well when finishing fourth in the recent Easter Sprint but with I Am Fred again present, Curlin’s Affair will have to be at his best to get to the winners’ enclosure in front.
