KINGSTON, Jamaica – Veteran rider Everton “Killa” Miller despite his many successes in the pigskin during his career has etched Saturday, December 18, 2021, as one of massive career significance.
Saturday, December 18, 2021, was the day, Miller rode the Philip Feanny trained I’ve Got Magic to victory at odds of 29-1. That was his first winner in 33 years.
“I have ridden many glorious winners in my time. But today's (Saturday) win will forever serve and remain a special occasion in my life. It feels as though I have just won the Jamaica Derby.
“In this glowing moment only, the creator knows and my heart feels the joy that this win has brought me. It is more than a win. It is a victory over all other successes that I have been blessed with. Why? For I have ridden for one of the greatest trainers in horseracing in the English-speaking Caribbean: The name is Philip Feanny. It is 33 years that I have not won a race for him. I won over 50 races for him in the 1980s and added to that I have also ridden a number of winners for the horse's owner Mr Richard Lake. I brought back glowing memories of winning the Derby in 1987.
“When I worked this horse last week over the half-mile stretch and the trainer said the way this horse is running is a joy to my heart. Last week Friday, I was in the company of Mr Robert Dabdoub, an owner, and breeder, who also owns horses in Canada, and he asked me who is the best trainer at Caymanas Park, I said to him without any question it is Philip Feanny. He then asked, which is the best local horse that I have ridden? My answer was Royal Dad and Monday Morning. The best foreign horse you rode? I said Regal And Bold. He said to me not because I owned Regal Bold. My response was Regal And Bold was an A-class and it was the best foreign horse I have ridden.
“Over the years I have been working so hard in the mornings; five, six-seven days a week and running for one and a half hours every morning and working six, seven, eight horses trying to get a ride and the only reason why I still ride is that I love riding. I am hooked on riding. I could have been training horses some 15 years ago. But I am so addicted to riding horses; I am still doing it and I am aware that pretty soon I will have to give it up as the weight is getting out of control. And when I retire, I want to be assistant [to] the great trainer, God's willing," Miller said.
