KINGSTON, Jamaica - Nine horses faced the starter in the 2024 edition of the 2000 Guineas, where the Jason DaCosta-trained California Crown delivered a gate-to-wire victory.
As anticipation builds for the 2025 edition of this prestigious one-mile Classic for three-year-old fillies on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Quickgallopja.com revisits the 2024 race to evaluate the progress—or setbacks—of its nine contenders.
This review follows the finishing order of the race.
FIRST: CALIFORNIA CROWN – After his Guineas win, California Crown attempted the St Leger and Derby, but failed to leave a mark. Following those efforts, he took a long, returning victoriously on January 4. The chestnut colt now competes in Open Allowance and boasts a career record of five wins from ten starts, with earnings surpassing $5 million.
SECOND: INTRESTNTIMESAHEAD – After finishing second in the Guineas, this bay colt soared to Classic glory in the 10-furlong Jamaica St Leger. His Mouttet Mile (December 7) run was underwhelming, and he stayed off the competitive radar until May 3, when he struggled. Just 20 days later, however, the true Intrestntimesahead reappeared, powering home to victory over seven furlongs. If his resurgence continues, he could well a torchbearer for the local brigade.
THIRD: PROVIDENT – A long break preceded his May 10 comeback win. Now in non-winners of three, this chestnut colt has displayed consistent form across 13 starts. The Overnight grade seems within reach, but expectations for further success remain tempered.
FOURTH: ALLEGIANCE – Has yet to live up to the promise once placed upon him.
FIFTH: CROWN CHASER – Despite a lacklustre Guineas run, Crown Chaser redeemed himself by capturing the Jamaica Derby. Since then, health setbacks have limited his time on the track. However, his return to morning exercise hints at a possible comeback.
SIXTH: KING PIYE – Still battling away but struggling to make any real impact.
SEVENTH: J SPIETH – Has endured a rough patch, and recently moving from Patrick Lynch’s stable to Jason DaCosta’s barn in search of a turnaround.
EIGHTH: PLAYFAIR – The less said, the better.
NINTH: KING’S CROWN – A rare sight on race days, seemingly hindered by persistent injuries.
