KINGSTON, Jamaica - Vanquisher, after finishing a close second over the straight (1,000m) course on May 23, returned and made no mistake in a native-bred five-year-olds and upwards, non-winners of four and imported five-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) over six furlongs (1,200m) on Saturday, August 5, 2023.
It was an even start for most of the runners in the 10-horse field as Vanquisher, under Matthew Bennett, dashed to the front leaving the five-furlong (1,000m) marker, holding the lead ahead of Big Argument (Paul Francis), Gone A Negril (Reyan Lewis), who recovered well after a poor start, and JJ Warrior (Roger Hewitt) going into the half-mile (800m) turn.
The Marlon Brown-trained Vanquisher maintained his lead entering the straight and fought off all challengers in deep stretch, hitting the line a short head in front Buff Bay (Dane Dawkins) and Gone A Negril.
Vanquisher completed the race in 1:17.3 (23.3 x 48.3).
For trainer Brown, it was his third winner since getting his licence in May from nine starts. While for Bennett it was win number 14 from 110 mounts.
