Woodbine canceled its Monday racing program because of extreme heat forecasted for the Toronto area.
The track posted the notice on social-media platform X, formerly Twitter. The track said the decision was made after consultation with veterinarians and the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario
Environment Canada, the country's official weather agency, forecast a sunny day Monday with a high of 90 degrees.
Monday's card had nine scheduled races, three on turf and six on the synthetic track. The card included a $114,000 optional-claiming allowance at 6 1/2 furlongs for 3-year-olds and up, with Silent Reserve as the 1-1 morning-line favorite. Also on the card was a $111,600 maiden special weight at five furlongs for 3-year-olds and up. Birthday Munnings was the morning-line favorite at 5-2.
Racing is scheduled to resume at Woodbine on Thursday, when the forecast called for a high of 79 degrees and a 60 percent chance of showers.
