Mandaloun was awarded the win in the US$1 million Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park after Hot Rod Charlie was disqualified and placed last for an incident in the stretch.
Hot Rod Charlie was judged by the stewards to have caused interference when he appeared to clip heels with Midnight Bourbon in deep stretch, which caused Paco Lopez aboard Midnight Bourbon to be tossed from his mount. Midnight Bourbon continued to gallop past the wire and appeared not to be seriously injured.
Mandaloun, who was second in the Kentucky Derby, returned US$8.20 for the win. Following Sea was second followed by Anitgravity and Pickin' Time.
Lopez provided an update of his status to the Monmouth Park publicity team.
“I’m good man. I am fine. I am just going to ice up," Lopez said. “My horse kicked me in the knee. I felt pain in my tendon there, and I couldn’t move my leg for about 10 minutes, but I am fine now I can bend my knee again.
"I think I would have won that race; I had my horse in the right position to win," Lopez added. "I was fighting back, but my horse had a lot of run left, so I think I could have won that race.
Dr Angelo Chinnici, Monmouth Park medical director, said Lopez had a soft tissue injury to his right knee and ankle.
