KINGSTON, Jamaica – Atomica, a three-year-old chestnut filly by Nuclear Wayne out of Honkeytonkville cemented her status as the leader among her cohort including colt and geldings, with an explosive performance in winning the second running of the 7 ½ - furlong The Portmore, the final prep before the one-mile Classic – 1000 Guineas.
Atomica gave her connections some anxious moments when she slipped going into her post-position, but luckily as was later confirmed by her rider Dane Dawkins, she did not hit anything, was quickly back on her hoofs, and then entered the gate without any fuss.
From the get-go, it was Atomica and Prncsshootingstar (Youville Pinnock), vying for the lead with Dawkins handling a ton. Then after 3 ½ furlongs Atomica took over but the explosion did not take place until the final two furlongs.
Atomica set blazing splits of 24.3 x 47.2 x 1:11.2 to finish in a stakes record time of 1:32.3, obliterating the previous mark of 1:33.4 set last year by She’s A Wonder.
The 61-1 chance Our Angel (Robert Halledeen) ran on to finish second with Silent Mission (Omar Walker) third.
Atomica was the third winner on the day for Dawkins.
