KINGSTON, Jamaica – He has not won a race in 2021 but that is now history as claiming apprentice Romario Spencer did the job while oozing confidence on the top rated Toona Ciliata in this year’s renewal of the Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy run over 6 ½ furlongs as the Caymanas Saturday nightcap.
When the Overnight came out last Tuesday, many whispers were heard once punters saw that Spencer although slipping four kilogrammes would ride such a ‘big’ horse but the young man did himself proud with what can only be described as a masterful display in the saddle.
He stayed of the brutal fractions of 22.4 x 45.4 set by Patriarch (Dick Cardenas) and England’s Rose (Anthony Thomas).
Spencer was close enough to strike on Toona Ciliata in the straight as he cut a clear path through England’s Rose on the inside and God of Love (Chris Mamdeen) just on Toona Ciliata’s outside. Father Patrick (Tevin Foster – chance ride) was working overtime on the wide outside.
In a bang-up finish, Spencer showed his worth to all and sundry by clinically driving his mount forward to earn victory by three parts of a length.
Second was God of Love with third going to England’s Rose.
