KINGSTON, Jamaica – While the accolades were deservedly bestowed upon Mouttet Mile winner Rough Entry and his connections, The Quick Galloper couldn't help but notice the outstanding performances of the three-year-olds in this prestigious race.
The 2023 Derby winner, Ability, finished second; the Oaks and 1000 Guineas winner, Mamma Mia, came in third; and foreign contender Is That A Fact secured fourth place.
Further down the field of 15, three-year-olds Money Miser and 2000 Guineas winner Mojito claimed seventh and twelfth positions, respectively.
The second, third, and fourth-place finishes by Ability, Mamma Mia, and Is That A Fact added a unique dimension to the Mouttet Mile's outcome and hinted at their promising futures.
ABILITY – Despite carrying only 51.0 kilogrammes, not many thought Patrick Lynch's trainee had a shot at winning the Mouttet Mile. However, the astute trainer prepared Ability exceptionally well, resulting in a commendable performance. Success in the top grade undoubtedly awaits Ability.
MAMMA MIA – The true surprise of the 2023 Mouttet Mile was Mamma Mia. With starting odds of 44-1, she wasn't expected to win or even place prominently in this mile-long race. Nonetheless, she set impressive splits of 23.0, 45.0 x 1:10.0 and maintained her pace throughout the final two furlongs. This significant effort confirms her potential to triumph in Grade One races covering distances from five furlongs to a mile.
IS THAT A FACT – Entering the Mouttet Mile following a notable drop in form, this run rejuvenated the connections of this foreign contender.
