It’s the locals versus the foreigners
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The first race on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at Caymanas Park promises to answer many three-year-old questions. The race is a three-year-old non-winners of two contest for locally bred horses and a maiden for three-year-old foreigners going a distance of 7 ½ furlongs.
This is another crucial step, especially for the local three-year-olds as the Classic races loom large, with preparation to sort out the various issues moving apace.
The non-two call also sees the return of two first-time winners, The Citadel and Peaky Blinkers, who both impressed in their debut victories.
THE QUICK GALLOPER has done the assessment of the eight starters which is shared with readers on QUICKGALLOP.COM.
1 – Roraima is a three-year-old bay colt by Bern Identity out of Classic Princess trained by Anthony Nunes. Roraima has raced four times with his only win coming at a mile. His last racing effort was on February 26, when Roraima finished seventh, with Lukol, also present in this race, about eight lengths ahead. There is no shift in the handicaps, making Roraima’s chances of winning difficult. Roraima races with the visor on.
2 – Lion of Ekati is a three-year-old US-bred dark bay colt trained by Jason DaCosta. This foreigner has not shown anything of worth in his five outings and that trend is going to continue on Saturday.
3 – RAINSVILLE is a three-year-old grey colt by Casual Trick out of Fiftyshadesofgray trained by Richard Azan. Rainsville on his last appearance finished third behind Outbidder and Luksol going seven furlongs. Then Rainsville was just under a length behind Luksol, and based on the former’s style of running the extra furlong on Saturday might be to his advantage.
4 – Wowza is a three-year-old US-bred dark bay colt by Jack Milton out of Springtime Rain trained by Anthony Nunes. Wowza has raced for four times and had never hit the board. He has a lot more waiting to do.
5 – The Citadel is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Key To Power out of Wings of Hope trained by Ian Parsard. Did well on debut (Feb 19), winning at 6 ½ furlongs in a slow time of 1:23.1. THE QUICK GALLOPER reminds readers that the race track over the last two months or so has been running slow, some 1.2 to 1.5 seconds slower than usual. The Citadel has been progressing at exercise, with this race providing an outlet to the Classic. The Citadel has to run well here if he is going to have a look in when the big races arrive. The Citadel races on Saturday with first-time Lasix.
6 – Our Angel is three-year-old bay filly by Savoy Stomp out of My Angel trained by Robert Pearson. Our Angel raced seven days ago against fellow age group fillies in the Hot Line Stakes and could not manage then. Our Angel cannot deal with these.
7 – Luksol is a US-bred three-year-old bay filly by Tapiture out of Stunning Taste trained by Jason DaCosta. This filly has finished second on four of her five career starts, always seeming to find one better. Luksol is the speed in this contest and has to be caught. The question is can Luksol last 7 ½ furlongs? Thus far in her five starts, Luksol, the most experienced of this lot, has not shown that she is the staying kind. Saturday might be a different story.
8 – Peaky Blinders is a bred in utero three-year-old chestnut colt by Mshawish out of Visionary Wonder trained by Steven Todd. A convincing winner on debut at five furlongs straight in a noticeable clocking of 59.2 seconds. The five straight chute is not the best course to make an assessment of the strength of a horse, yet Peaky Blinkers caught the eye after being slowly out and the forward thrust that followed. All eyes will be on Peaky Blinders.
