KINGSTON, Jamaica - Lady Babita, a three-year-old chestnut filly by Soul Warrior out of Lady Abhijita stepped forward to win the fillies only, Eight Thirty Sprint on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Caymanas Park.
The Eight Thirty Sprint, considered to be the official start of the three-year-old Classic serious was contested over five furlongs straight with nine horses facing the starter.
Guided by Tevin Foster for conditioner Matthew Williams, Lady Babita raced with the leaders for the first two furlongs. After going by the dummy rails, she pointed, but was quickly pounced upon by Linguist (Dick Cardenas). Yet, Babita stuck to her task by digging deep, pulling away to score by 1 ¾ length in a time of 1:01.1.
Linguist finished second with first-timer Dutchess (Omar Walker) occupying the third close.
In his post-race interview with Quickgallopja.com, Williams said while pleased with the performance of his filly, there was still a long way to go.
“While the win by Lady Babita was not surprising, it was encouraging to see the manner in which she fought to gain her first success.
“This was only her second outing, so its now time to plan the future of Lady Babita,” the conditioner offered.
Commenting further Williams said that Lady Babita should have no major issues with effectively going longer than the five furlongs of the Eight Thirty.”
