KINGSTON, Jamaica - The 2025 racing season is off to a strong start, having completed seven race days—six in January and one so far in February. With these early results, the championships are beginning to take shape.
In the leading horse’s category, three competitors—California Crown, Drone Strike, and Buzz Assault—have each secured two victories from their two starts.
Buzz Assault, a claimer, has now achieved six wins in 30 lifetime races, with his most recent victory occurring on February 1 under trainer Ryan Williams and apprentice Shanye Martin over the five-furlong straight course. In 2025 alone, Buzz Assault has earned $764,400.
Drone Strike, a past winner of the Jamaica Derby, is currently competing in the claiming ranks and boasts a career total of eight wins from 47 starts. His latest victory came on January 26, with Shane Ellis riding for trainer Oral Hayden. With his two wins this year, Drone Strike has accumulated nearly $9 million in total earnings.
California Crown, the 2024 2000 Guineas winner, made a triumphant return from injury on January 4 at the non-winners of four level, dominating his rivals at 5 ½ furlongs with a winning margin of eight lengths and a swift time of 1:05.4 seconds.
Following this impressive performance, California Crown raced again on February 1, winning his Overnight Allowance debut at five furlongs. Thanks to his two victories in 2025, he now leads the earnings list with a total of $1,332,250.
