KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Caymanas Saturday eighth developed into an intriguing battle in the straight between jockeys Anthony Thomas on Sunshine Cat and Dick Cardenas on Mirabilis. In a duel with no quarter being given it was the Johnny Wilmot trained Sunshine Cat who took home the winner's ’ purse.
Sunshine Cat was victorious in a claimer ($750,000 - $700,000) travelling 9 furlongs and 25 yards.
It was Dezzy The Genius (Oshane Nugent) who carried the early pace going into the Clubhouse turn. On the backstretch it was still Dezzy The Genius with the lead followed by Biblical Legend (Jemar Jackson) with Subbie (Dane Dawkins) occupying the third slot. Sunshine Cat at this time raced in fifth place. with Mirabilis behind.
After five furlongs went by, Dawkins pushed thorough Subbie to take the lead as Thomas started to move Sunshine Cat forward. Mirabilis also started to progress at this stage.
Sunshine Cat disposed of Subbie to enter the last two furlongs on the inside and with the lead but now Mirabilis was hounding on the outside.
Mirabilis gained the advantage at the furlong pole but somehow Thomas managed to squeeze every ounce of energy out of Sunshine Cat who rallied under a strong hand ride to get the win in the glass.
