KINGSTON, Jamaica – After sustained rainfall over several days, the race track was sloppy - soft underfoot conditions.
Quickly it was noticed that leaders were winners as over the 10 races close finishes were few and far between.
The day started on a presumptuous note with the little-used and now almost forgotten Ruja Lahoe winning on Winx Choice at odds of 20-1 for trainer Steven Todd. That result saw many tickets in the Reggae-6 going out of the window.
Lahoe capped his best day in many moons when he sealed a double later in the day on Michael Beecham’s Awesome Glitter.
Lahoe in the early stage of his career showed a lot of promise but was side-lined for a while because of an injury. It is good to see the young man fighting through his issues with a double. Let’s hope this trend will continue for Lahoe.
Dane Dawkins continued his resurgence with a good ride on the Gary Subratie trained maiden foreigner Pretty Cash and was easy on Take Two.
Racegoers have been noticing the improvement made by Dawkins who has now emerged as one of the better riders around now. The young man, as many turfites know, has had his fair share of disappointments but has grown in stature and competence in the saddle in recent times and that is shown by the quality of his many pigskin performances.
TRAINERS’ RACE
Entering the day, Gary Subratie was just over $2000 in front of champion Anthony Nunes. Subratie saddled Pretty Cash on the day while Nunes was winless.
Based on preliminary calculations the Subratie lead is now approximately $136,025, as despite not having a winner, many of Nunes’ horses finished in earning positions including King’s Magician (second) and Atonement (fourth) in the race won by Pretty Cash.
We are in for exciting days in this trainers’ championship.
HORSES
Nothing much to report in this area except the wins by foreigner I Am Fred and Take Two. Both these horses won two on the trot and should be followed in future engagements.
