QUICKGALLOP
KINGSTON, Jamaica - THE QUICK GALLOPER’s race-by-race assessment following the conclusion of each race day continues with the target date for analysis, Saturday, April 9, 2022. Readers on QUICKGALLOP.COM please note that this analysis may exclude certain race(s), which will be dealt with in separate articles.
RACE ONE – Omron justified her 3-5 favouritism with a 13-length victory that gave trainer and owner Joseph Thomas his first win in 2022 from 23 starts.
Omron - Dane Nelson
RACE TWO – Foreign filly Double Diva made a return to competitive racing after a break of 206 days mainly due to injury. She won by 8 ¼ lengths to make it two visits to the winners’ enclosure from three starts. Double Diva has talent as her clocking of 58.1 seconds for five furlongs straight clearly demonstrates. The hope for her connections led by trainer Jason DaCosta is that Double Diva remains healthy and can showcase her talent in the higher classes. Double Diva was the first winner on the card for DaCosta, jockey Anthony Thomas, and owner Carlton Watson.

RACE THREE – This was a romp for Sudden Flight in a $550,000 - $450,000 claimer at 4 ½ furlongs. It was win number two for DaCosta, Watson, and Thomas. For the record, the time done by Sudden Flight in his 10-length victory of 53.3 seconds was a new track record for this new distance. The first three winners were all odds-on favourites; Omron 3-5, Double Diva 1-5, and Sudden Flight 1-9.
Sudden Flight - Anthony Thomas
RACE FOUR – Adwa ridden by Javaniel Patterson for trainer Lawrence Freemantle ended the cycle of odds-on favourites winning starting at odds of 3-1. Patterson continues to be a frequent visitor to the winners’ enclosure with Adwa being his tenth in 2022. For Freemantle, it was his fifth from 43 starts.

RACE FIVE – This event although won by the 3-5 on Quanna (Anthony Thomas) was somewhat strange. Quanna was racing for the eighth occasion and in those eight efforts, his best finish was eighth, 8 ¼ lengths behind the winner Adoring Texas. Yet, Quanna was installed as the 3-5 favourite, winning by all of 21 lengths. Third winner for Thomas.

RACE SIX – Another race with an added twist. Berning Red, a three-year-old winner of one race from two starts, was suddenly entered in a $1 million claiming race. This move by the connections of Berning Red gave the indication that all was not right with this bay gelding. In the race itself, Berning Red (Omar Walker) was slowly out but finished with a flash to win easily by 1 ½ lengths, clocking 1:14.3 for six furlongs. It is going to be interesting to see where Berning Red, who was not claimed, goes next.

RACE SEVEN – This five-round contest saw the return of Perfect Brew, considered to be one of the better racers among the male three-year-old cohort. Perfect Brew had raced in the Sir Howard Stakes on March 13, finishing fifth almost three lengths behind the winner Tekapunt. It was, however, newcomer and foreigner Madelyn’s Sunshine who shone on debut. This dark bay filly was impressive in victory coming from off the pace, clocking a respectable 1:00.3 for five furlongs round. Going forward, Madelyn’s Sunshine should be watched. This was the third winner on the day for trainer Jason DaCosta and owner Carlton Watson, while jockey Anthony Thomas completed his four-timer.
Madelyn's Sunshine - Anthony Thomas
RACE EIGHTH – The eighth wasn’t much of a race as with six starters going nine furlongs and 25 yards, there was going to be only one winner, and that was the Gary Subratie trained JJ Warrior. JJ Warrior completed his second win from 26 starts, and did so with the visor off and the blinkers on. For winning jockey Paul “Country’ Francis it was his 11th winning mount in 2022.

RACE NINE – The Anthony Nunes trained three-year-old Supreme Song made his long-awaited return to competitive racing after a break of 147 days. Under the guidance of Shane Ellis, Supreme Song, half-brother to former top-class campaigner Toona Ciliata was able to eke out a win by the narrow margin of a neck over Get A Pepsi. Racing fans will have to wait to see how Supreme Song progresses from here.
