THE QUICK GALLOPER’S NOTES ON THE FIRST RACE DAY OF 2022

Five first time runners 

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The new racing year (2022) starts on Saturday, January 1, with 10 races at the usual venue, Caymanas Park.

Not the best horses around have been nominated to greet the New Year, this after the hectic period of 31 races over the last three race days of 2021.

THE QUICK GALLOPER has taken a closer look at the 10 races for the benefit of readers. 

Of special note is that all horses as of January 1, of each year, age by one year.  

HORSES 

There will be five first-time runners, all three-year-olds and all run in the fifth race.  

Babylon Will Fall is a chestnut colt by Sensational Slam out of Karlie trained by Alford Brown.  

Prince Sanjay is a chestnut colt by Emperor Hall out of Dolla Fifty trained by Steven Todd. Dolla Fifty is also the dam of Fifty Cents.  

North London is a bay filly by Savoy Stomp out of Right Marker trained Ryan Darby. Right Marker is the dam of Deal Marker. 

Funometer is a bay colt by Traditional out of Opulent trained by Anthony Nunes. Opulent is the dam of Yetagain and Hoist The Mast. 

Zion’s Princess is a bay filly by Midnight Hawk out of Lookatmenow trained by Michael Beecham.  

The oldest horse on the programme is Lion of Judah, who at age 10 races in the fifth offering.  

JOCKEYS 

With champion jockey Anthony Thomas, and second in the championship Dick Cardenas both injured and unavailable to mount up, Robert Halledeen whose resurgence over the last three race days was quite noticeable heads the pack of riders.

Halledeen has secured six rides on the day in races 2-3-4-5-7 and 10. Roger Hewitt also jumps into the riding fray with six mounts in races 2-3-4-5-7 and 10.  

TRAINERS 

Following the cooling down in the trainers’ championship involving champion Anthony Nunes and Jason DaCosta, both conditioners have decided to give their string of horses.

Nunes has one horse on the programme, newcomer Funometer in the fifth, with DaCosta's only starter Baton Rouge nominated to run in the tenth race. 

Trainer Steven Todd leads the way with entries in five races – numbers 4-5-6-7 and 8.
