KINGSTON, Jamaica – While the Pick 3 ‘Super Challenge’ Trophy highlighted the Saturday card of November 27, 2021, it is necessary to mention the performances of Eroy, among others on the day.
THE QUICK GALLOPER has already dealt with Brinks and his impressive victory in the Pick 3 in part one of the race day analysis. Part two deals with the other happenings on the day.
EROY
The day is slowly approaching when this pugnacious campaigner will be afforded the respect he deservedly commands. Yes, the handicaps were in his favour compared with Further and Beyond who beat him in the Jamaica Cup, but Eroy and his jockey Oshane Nugent still had to deliver, and both responded with calculated efficiency.
Eroy did not lead nor was he close to the pace as is the norm in nearly all of his previous races.
Instead, Nugent floated close to the back of the field while guiding Eroy to the inside rails coming from the number nine draw. Moving smoothly along the rails, Eroy gradually got closer to the leaders and by the time they entered the lane was already in a striking position. Nugent then blocked the inside rails, where Further and Beyond (Linton Steadman) chose to utilise for their challenge.
This was certainly one of the better rides by Nugent, as it showed maturity and good judgement. Let’s hope this young man will use this improved riding performance on Eroy as a platform for greater endeavours in the pigskin.
Trainer Richard Azan is deserving of credit for keeping Eroy in shape and for performing consistently in the top grade.
Eroy now has a record of seven wins from 26 starts.
SUPER DUPER
This three-year-old bay filly by Natural Selection – Patara has raced only six times, which is a clear indication that she has issues to deal with and as a result has raced sparingly.
Super Duper has faced the starter three times this season and has now won twice for a career record of three wins from six starts.
Returning from a break of 161 days with Anthony Thomas in the saddle Super Duper devoured the five straight course clocking a fast 58.2 seconds.
Super Duper, if he stays fit, should win out his restricted conditions this year and after that compete in Overnight Allowance. Good to see Super Duper back on track.
CLASSICAL ORB
Trainer Ian Parsard should sleep on the same side every time he goes to bed. He is having a ground-breaking year with the likes of Big Jule, She’s A Wonder, Father Patrick, Jordan Reign’s, and now Brinks flying the stable's flag with some outstanding performances, and don’t forget there is also Mahogany to think about.
Big Jule is in his “ackee” at the moment, so too Jordan Reign’s, who seems like he will hit the top grade in short order without losing a race, while the exploits of She’s A Wonder and Father Patrick are well known.
Brinks is currently the leading two-year-old, but there is another horse in the Parsard arsenal who is gaining momentum although only at the three-year-old non-winners of two-level. That horse is Classical Orb.
Classical Orb, a three-year-old bay colt by Orb out of Tiz A Masterpiece, has raced twice, with a second-place effort on debut over a mile. In his first race, Classical Orb came with a thunderous burst in the final furlong after racing out of camera view, losing by only a neck.
Then he went even longer on Saturday, 9 ½ furlongs, and dismantled a field of maidens. Yes, it might be too early to blow even a harmonica much less a trumpet for Classical Orb, but there is enough there to suggest that he will have a smooth passage through his conditions; and then who knows?

Quite true, jockey ONugent executed a brilliant ride on Eroy, but where is that ride or something near it on Perfect Brew? He along with TFoster and LSteadman are in what I call the Yow-Yow category - they don't a 50% present assurance of winning even on a sound and out of class horse. The trainers/owners are suffering from this when AThomas, DCardenas, OWalker (now on a high) and RHolladeen (a hyper who is far below the previous three and his 3 years ago self). SEllis is still one of the best tactician on a horse back but it is obvious that he is far below his best - this could be to fitness or age. but I choose to conclude that its a combination of both.
CUTTING TO THE CHASE, WE NEEDS BETTER JOCKEYS, JOCKEYS COMMITTED TO THEIR CRAFT.
Trainers are urged to try these three apprentices with a stronger purpose - AABLE, RSPENCER and YPINNOCK. I wrote mentioning ABLE's winning ride on Fly Messenger Fly some weeks ago - a display of her potential. Now please observe similar displays by PINNOCK, Sat. Nov 27, on Storm Valley, and SPENCER, Sun, Nov 28, on It's All I.
