THE POSITIVES
Apart from the heroics of Atomica, it was heart-warming to witness the progress of Brinks, who after finishing third in the St Leger, came good in the Derby with a second-place effort. While Brinks came to the fore, it has to be taken into consideration that he still has not won a race at three, being in the non-winners of three bracket. THE QUICK GALLOPER believes that Brinks will in due course go through his conditions (non-three and non-four), reaching Overnight and then Open Allowance, once he stays healthy.
Blue Vinyl, winner of the St Leger and third in the Derby is now part of the Open Allowance cohort, where, especially beyond seven furlongs, he is expected to do well.
The 2022 Derby cemented the rise to Classic status of jockey Dane Dawkins. ‘Devastating’ Dane as he is known these days has made significant progress over the last year or so, culminating with his wins in the 1000 Guineas and the Derby. The young man is currently enjoying a purple patch and long may it continue.
While credit is due to Dawkins and his forward movement, Raddesh Roman, who piloted Blue Vinyl to victory in the 2000 Guineas and the Jamaica St Leger, cannot be taken out of the developmental equation. Roman is now a Classic winning rider, whose future is bright.
Stallion Bern Identity domiciled at Paradise at Spring Village can be proud after three of his offspring finished second (Brinks), third (Blue Vinyl), and fourth (D Head Cornerstone) in the 2022 Jamaica Derby.
Trainer Patrick ‘Wacky’ Lynch has already demonstrated his ability to produce Derby winners with The Bomber and Drone Strike recorded as winners of the blue riband event. Winning two more Classic races, the St Leger and the 2000 Guineas, has added stock to his career.
Two Derby winners in succession is quite an achievement for trainer Gary Subratie, who continues to sparkle on the local racing scene. All Subratie has left to do is win a championship, which is not far off.
THE NEGATIVES
The three-year-old cohort of 2022, if you take out Atomica, Blue Vinyl, and Brinks, can be described as a woeful lot. The fourth-place finisher in the Derby, D Head Cornerstone was 25 1/2 lengths off the winner. From this grouping minus the three already mentioned, do not expect many to fulfill their existing conditions, with the possibility of going, to say, Overnight Allowance remote at best.
