The Key To Ability Winning The Derby Was Missing The St Leger – Patrick Lynch

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Trainer Patrick Lynch believes that choosing to bypass the Jamaica St Leger and opting for an experienced jockey like Allen Maragh were crucial decisions leading to his horse Ability's victory in the Jamaica Derby on Monday, August 7, 2023.

After finishing third in the 2000 Guineas, more than 14 lengths behind Mojito and Money Miser on June 4, Lynch observed that his three-year-old bay colt displayed no inclination of covering extra distance. He decided to focus on preparing Ability for the main goal: the Jamaica Derby.

Lynch explained, "I didn't think he had enough stamina; therefore, I decided to skip the Jamaica St Leger and train him a bit harder. By doing so, we had more time to prepare him."

"When he [Ability] completed his run in the 2000 Guineas, it seemed like he wasn't able to get the trip. However, I was aware that I hadn't put any pressure on him before the race.

“I omitted the St Leger and trained him properly for the Jamaica Derby, and he succeeded," Lynch added.

As a result, Ability delivered one of his best performances thus far by winning the 12-furlong event effortlessly. When Ability overtook long-time leader Mojito close to entering the lane for the final two furlongs, it became apparent just how dominant the bay colt was performing on the day.

:He won by three and a half lengths with a time of 2:42.3 (24.0 x 48.1 x 1:16.0 x 1:42.3 x 2:10.1).

"It's a fantastic feeling. This demonstrates that success comes with hard work — we've been putting in the effort, and I feel great about it. Although it wasn't a spectacular performance, I'm proud to have won my third Derby race," said Lynch, who previously saddled The Bomber in 2007 and Drone Strike in 2018.

Lynch also credited Maragh with playing a significant role in Ability's triumph. "Allen Maragh is an exceptional jockey. He has extensive experience, and I chose him for his expertise and racing knowledge; he rode a flawless race," Lynch asserted.
