Hattrick for Anthony Thomas, Shane Ellis at his best

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The race meeting of Saturday, February 26, 2022, from the jockeys’ perspective, saw champion Anthony Thomas return to his old self, after a rather sedate first seven weeks of the 2022 racing year.

Before the start of Champions Day, Thomas in defence of his crown as the champion jockey had ridden seven winners from 50 mounts, with the runaway leader being Dane Dawkins with 18 wins from 68 rides. Dawkins was followed by Robert Halledeen with 12 wins from 65 rides. Both Dawkins and Halledeen were winless on Saturday.

Thomas gave a gentle reminder that he is still around with three winners, Fearless Champion for trainer Al Brown; Outbidder for Jason DaCosta, and Another Champion for Nicholas Smith. If ever there was a rake on the Saturday programme Thomas provided it.

The day was declared Champions Day, with the top performers of 2021 receiving their respective trophies. Well, champion jockey Anthony Thomas rode Fearless CHAMPION, and Another CHAMPION to victory, plus to boot, Thomas won the race that was named after him.

Thomas was particularly efficient on Fearless Champion as he had to dive into his strength reserve to get his mount to rally when under pressure from Mirabilis (Robert Halledeen).

Dawkins might be the leading jockey at this time but there are still ten months to go in the racing year, and there is plenty more to come.

Javaniel Patterson, and the rejuvenated veteran Oneil Mullings both rode two winners. Patterson won with Loose Cannon for trainer Leroy Tomlinson, and Isotope for trainer Nicholas Smith.

Quietly without the sounding of any trumpet, Patterson has been quietly raking in the winners, eight in all this year from 55 rides.

Mullings who sometimes goes by the moniker of Lester Piggott, is enjoying his best run in recent times. Mullings brought home Estalita for trainer Marlon Anderson, and Oh My Goodness for Ryan Darby.

Mullings is riding well with him holding a seeming attachment with trainer Ryan Darby, Errol Subratie, and Philip Feanny, more winners can be expected.

Jockey Shane the “Canter Man” Ellis proved once again that going two turns in especially the big races he has no equal.

Riding the top class and rated Calculus for trainer Gary Subratie, Ellis waited and watched, then when he moved while navigating the final bend in the 9 ½ furlong - Miracle Man Cup, Oneofakind, his main protagonist also moved. A closer look at the head-on replay, provides a clear indication that Ellis (on the inside) when Oneofakind (on the outside) went forward, had to take a slight pull on Calculus, yet without any fuss, Ellis kept his mount going into a challenging position when they turned for home.

It was another masterful performance in the saddle by this highly talented jockey.
