KINGSTON, Jamaica - The name Jaghai is deeply rooted in the history of horseracing in Jamaica
Family patriarch Henry was an owner who ran the successful Bombay Stud Farm. His brother Harry excelled as a trainer and celebrated many major race victories. Howard, Harry's son, is still actively working as a conditioner, having already saddled over 100 winners.
The Jaghai family's legacy in local racing continues with Henry’s grandson, Matthew Williams, and his father, Mark Williams, Henry’s son-in-law. Both are currently operating the Bombay Stud Farm, with Matthew taking on the role of a trainer.
Matthew began his training career in 2018 at Gulfstream Park in Florida, where he has achieved 25 wins, 50 seconds, and 35 thirds from 325 starts.
Matthew then decided to move part of his tack to Caymanas Park about two months ago.
After seven starts at the Park, the young conditioner celebrated his first winner on Saturday, December 14, 2024, with his imported mare Mudshaft, who triumphed in the third race with an impressive 10-length victory.
"Horse racing is in my blood, my DNA. Growing up, I used to come to the racetrack, and I've always loved horses,” Williams shared his passion.
Williams expressed confidence in Mudshaft's abilities, considering her impressive track record.
"We've won two races with her at Gulfstream Park, and she's had a lot of seconds and thirds as well," he noted. "Today, we were confident she would win comfortably, but I didn't think she'd run that fast! I'm pleased with the win."
Ridden by Tevin Foster, Mudshaft clocked an impressive 58.4 seconds for the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course.
Mudshaft got off to a good start but had to sit behind the speedy Adenosine, who set the pace. Foster skillfully waited for the right moment to strike. That moment arrived with two furlongs to go when Foster urged the five-year-old bay mare to unleash her full potential.
Mudshaft eagerly responded, taking the lead at the furlong pole and pulling away for a comfortable victory. Adenosine (ridden by Shavon Townsend) held on for second place, while AKA Storm (Raddesh Roman) finished third.
