KINGSTON, Jamaica – Returning to competitive racing after a hiatus of 120 days mainly to deal with injury issues, Sparkle Diamond turned in an impressive performance to win the Caymanas Sunday eighth.
Sparkle Diamond produced in excellent condition by trainer Errol Waugh and with Anthony Thomas doing the riding duties, set off with the early leaders but suffered some interference while entering the four-furlong turn.
Thomas had to pull back as Trevor’s Choice (Linton Steadman), Mr Universe (Oshane Nugent) and Sea Swan (Aaron Chatrie) fought it out on the front end.
Thomas then started to move Sparkle Diamond smoothly around horses on the outside to enter the stretch drive in about fourth place. Changing his hold Thomas asked and got a surge response from Sparkle Diamond who went by all but still had to dig deep to hold the burst of old timer Chace The Great by three parts of a length. Universal Boss was third.
The final time done by Sparkle Diamond was a fast 1:04.4.
Sparkle Diamond was the third winner on the day for Thomas to make it four on the weekend.
