KINGSTON, Jamaica – Champion jockey got the Champions Day race card underway with a pulsating ride on winner Fearless Champion.
That first Champions Day race was for high claimers ($1 million - $800,000) – three-year-olds and upwards at 7 ½ furlongs.
Fearless Champion engaged 3-5 favourite Let Him Fly (Dane Nelson) on the front end and it was a close tussle between the two going down the backstretch.
Fearless Champion went ahead but just while passing the half-mile pole with Mirabilis (Robert Halladeen) getting closer to the front duo.
In the lane, Mirabilis pointed but Thomas got the best out of Fearless Champion, who rallied strongly to get to the winning post 1 ¼ lengths ahead of Mirabilis. Let Him Fly was third.
