Calculus begins to show his class
KINGSTON, Jamaica – THE QUICK GALLOPER revisits the 2021 Sir Howard Stakes to find out how the ten participants have done since then.
This analysis is done in the order the horses finished.
FIRST: Calculus – The evolution of Calculus since victory in the Sir Howard has been phenomenal. He went on to win the Derby, St Leger, and the Gold Cup, all in 2021, and was voted as the first runner-up to the Horse of the Year. In 2022, Calculus has raced twice and has won twice to firmly establish himself as one of the top two horses currently in training.
SECOND: Regnant – There is no doubt that Regnant has talent but he is beleaguered by injuries. As a result, Regnant racing sojourn has been significantly stymied. Two weeks ago, in his latest race track appearance, Regnant had to be pulled up, once again feeling the sting of his maladies.
THIRD: Billy Whizz – This horse has made significant gains since he ran in the Sir Howard. He has weaved his way to the Open Allowance grade, plus his exploits in the top-rated events have been of the highest quality. Billy Whizz is currently enjoying a well-earned break following a gruelling three-year-old season. He has not raced as yet in 2022.
FOURTH: Regal and Royal – A good run by Regal and Royal in the Sir Howard, which he has not replicated. He is still fighting to meet his conditions.
FIFTH: Alimony – Has not come to the fore after the Sir Howard. Now, he is dabbling in and around claiming.
SIXTH: Moneyman – Nothing much has come from Money Man since the Sir Howard.
SEVENTH: Miniature Man – His effort in the Sir Howard was tame, then Miniature Man went on to dead heat in the inaugural Kingston Cup (7 ½ furlongs), and afterward he triumphed in the 2000 Guineas (one mile). Having secured a noted Classic victory, Miniature Man has been restricted by injuries. He returned to exercise earlier this year and is not expected to race for another two months or so.
EIGHTH: Johncrowjeff – Nothing more from this one.
NINTH: Santorini – Has been, slowly but surely, making his way through the classes. Santorini seems to be coming along nicely, especially at the longer distances.
TENTH: King’s Magician – Since the Sir Howard, King’s Magician has made little headway.
