KINGSTON, Jamaica – Trainer of Mojito, the champion two-year-old, and favourite going into The Kingston, Richard Azan did not hide his concern when contacted by The Quick Galloper after the draw which saw his charge exiting from barrier number two in the field of 12 runners.
The Kingston, for three-year-old colts and geldings, will be contested going 7 ½ furlongs on Sunday, May 7, 2023.
Commenting on Mojito’s two draw Azan said. “Well, I am not happy. The last time he raced in the Prince Consort about a month ago he was drawn at one, now its two…he (Mojito) can’t seem to escape the inside rails of late, it is a terrible, terrible draw.”
The Kingston considered to be the last major prep race before the 2000 Guineas had Blue Vinyl as the winner in 2022. Blue Vinyl then went on to achieve glory in the 2000 Guineas, and the Jamaica St Leger.
“The draw was live and fair, so I am not saying anything against the procedure, but this race (The Kingston) is more like the Derby. But, that is what the Racing Gods have in store for me, so I will just deal with it and plan the best strategy for success. I would have preferred a draw in mid-pack or on the outside, but it was not to be,” the Hall of Fame trainer said.
When asked about possible danger horses among the field of 12, for his charge Azan said: “My gosh, there are many. Ability won handsomely last Saturday and is obviously a horse of some worth, then there is Huntsman, who won impressively on debut. All in all, this is a tough race, and the eventual winner has to get it right on the day. Time will tell, and may the best horse win.”
