KINGSTON, Jamaica - The champion groom of 2024, Garth Pennant is honoured in race six on Grooms’ Association Day.
The Garth Pennant Trophy is for three-year-old maidens going seven furlongs.
The chances of the 13 horses entered to achieve success are examined by The Quick Galloper.
- MIDNIGHT RUNNER: A roan colt (May 23) by Midnight Hawk out of Fantabulous, trained by Adrian Prince with Eric Haughton riding. Notable for his progressive improvement in morning exercises, Midnight Runner is a contender to watch.
- MIRACLE SELECTION: A bay colt (March 9) by Midnight Hawk out of Sparkling Michaela, trained by Lincoln Lungs with Tyrese Anderson aboard. After four starts, he has yet to show winning potential.
- MODERN MONARCH: A bay colt (January 30) by Casual Trick out of Revolving Beauty, trained by Patrick Lynch with Youville Pinnock in the saddle. Progressing slowly through his five races, he will need additional time to mature.
- RILEY J: A bay filly (February 16) by Soul Warrior out of Hail De Cat, trained by David Powell with Dick Cardenas at the reins. Having faced disqualification on January 18, Riley J returned with a lacklustre performance. If she can regain her form, she may prove competitive. Notably, she races with the visor off and figure eight on.
- BENEISON: A bay colt (April 24) by Sensational Slam out of Benediction, trained by Ryan Williams with Tajay Suckoo as the jockey. In his debut on March 8, Beneison finished a respectable fourth, just five lengths behind the winner, making him a viable option for exotic bets.
- RUNAWAY STAR: A chestnut colt (April 18) by Northern Giant out of Runaway Gal, trained by Jason DaCosta with Raddesh Roman riding. Although his debut on January 28 did not meet expectations, he has shown improvement in workouts and, with the champion jockey, is a horse to respect.
- NEBUCHADNEZZAR: A chestnut colt (April 22) by Soul Warrior out of Queen of Bagdad, trained by Anthony Nunes with Tevin Foster aboard. After a strong fourth-place finish in his second-to-last race, he is well-prepared for this distance, which could be an asset going against maiden runners.
- SLAM SHARPE: A bay colt (February 10) by Sensational Slam out of Peggy’s Vision, trained by Michael Marlowe with Ian Spence riding. Racing with first-time Lasix, Slam Sharpe has shown up early in his last two races, putting him in contention for exotic wagers.
- PEAS HEAD: A bay colt (March 8) by Natural Selection out of Cowgirl Spirit, trained by Everal Francis with Richard Henry riding. He is gradually improving but still requires more time before he reaches his full potential.
- NEWSPAPEROFRECORD: A bay filly (April 6) by Storm Craft out of Jah Love, trained by Errol Burke with Anthony Allen aboard. As a debut runner, she is expected to gain valuable experience.
- PRINCE KAZAIRE: A brown colt (May 5) by Sensational Slam out of Maggie’s Way, trained by Adrian Prince with Oshane Nugent as the designated jockey. His best outcome may be a placement in the top four.
- PROLIFIC PRINCE: A chestnut colt (February 26) by Northern Giant out of Prolific Princess, trained by Adrian Prince with Shane Ellis riding. After finishing second behind Summer Palace just six days ago, he makes a quick turnaround and is anticipated to perform well.
- LOREDO: A bay colt (April 15) by Midnight Hawk out of Helmetta, trained by Paul Swaby with Shane Richardson riding. This debut race will serve as a learning opportunity for him.
