KINGSTON, Jamaica - Spencer Chung, the trainer of the promising Thoroughbred Sonny T And Chippy, is riding high on the wave of victory following their recent win in the prestigious Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association of Jamaica (TOBA) Trophy.
The event, which took place on Saturday, April 13, 2024, saw the spirited five-year-old bay colt, who is sired by Savoy Stomp and out of Trinket Box, emerge triumphant in a competitive Overnight Allowance race.
Expertly ridden by jockey Raddesh Roman, Sonny T And Chippy displayed a combination of strategy and strength, overtaking his competitors in the nine furlongs and 25-yard contest. His impressive finish, a length and three-quarters ahead of the nearest challenger, has made a statement.
Chung's faith in Sonny T And Chippy's abilities was vindicated as the colt maneuverer from behind the pack to clinch the victory. Despite a cautious start, Sonny T And Chippy showed great attentiveness, initially trailing close behind Bridal Blush, piloted by Roderick DaCosta.
As the race progressed, Sonny T And Chippy allowed Storm, with jockey Josue Osorio, to take the lead, strategically settling into third place as they entered the main track.
Maintaining a consistent pace, Sonny T And Chippy found himself in second place behind Bridal Blush as they rounded the half-mile turn.
However, it was at the top of the lane that he unleashed his full potential, surging to the front with undeniable momentum and sailing across the finish line to secure his victory.
The race culminated with Sunset Silhoutte, ridden by Abigail Able, claiming second place, and All For Love, with Omar Walker aboard, finishing in third. An impressive final race time of 2:00.0, with splits of 26.4, 51.1, 1:16.2, and 1:44.3, was recorded.
Chung expressed his satisfaction with Sonny T And Chippy's performance. "Sonny T and Chippy has always been there in his races. He is a good stayer, and so he just needed a good ride, and everything was always going to be alright," he said.
The trainer was also optimistic about the future prospects of his charge. "It was an excellent performance; I mean a winning performance is always good. He had some issues, and the vet worked on him, and now I hope he will improve and continue with his success," Chung added, hinting at previous challenges that have been overcome to reach this level of success.
As Sonny T And Chippy heads back to the stables, the racing world watches with anticipation for what might be next for this exceptional colt. Spencer Chung and his team have their sights set on continued progress and further triumphs, with the talented Sonny T And Chippy at the forefront of their campaign.
