Solid beginning, yet more to achieve," says trainer Anthony Nunes

KINGSTON, Jamaica – After a slow 2023, many times champion trainer Anthony Nunes bounced back, securing two victories on the first day (January 1) of 2024.

Nunes watched with some delight as his three-year-old first time starter Playfair immediately got off the mark with Raddesh Roman in the saddle.

He closed his double with Volatility piloted by Tevin Foster.

“I was particularly pleased with the win by Playfair. Granted there were only three horses in the race after three were declared as late non-starters, but Playfair did what he had to do, and anyway you take it, a win is a win.

“What was especially gratifying for me, is that, the dam of Playfair is Is Am Di One. That’s a horse I trained, who was a Classic winner, and was genuinely a top class campaigner, whose career was hampered by  injuries.

“So, it was quite satisfying to see the offspring of I Am Di One winning on debut. It is one of those occurrences in the harsh reality that is horse racing that really warms the heart,” Nunes told Quickgallop.com.

As to the remainder of 2024, Nunes was upbeat.

“For sure, 2023, did not turn out as planned for many different reasons, yet we at the stables stuck to the task and closed the year well with a number of winners in the final quarter, including Captain Calico, Hoist The Mast, Legit Boss, Hot Stepper, Morimoto, and World Surprise among others.

“I am looking forward to see how 2024 will unfold, as I have in the barn some talented, well–bred three and two-year-olds, whose development, I will be taking my time.

“I am eager with anticipation to witness their progression, and the hope is always for them to realise their true potential.

“For us at the Nunes stables, the work is continuing, it never stops, it only gets more. Hopefully, the stables will be contending in the Classic races, and, of course, in the other major races on offer,” Nunes said.

  1. Wishing Mr. Nunes and his barn a successful season and hopefully he can provide some much competition for top honors.

  2. Well typical of Jamaica the implementation of laws only exist on the Books while the book for the enforcements of these laws is still awaiting to be written.
The Racing Stewards/JRC talk safety but don't act in it's defence. Check the photo above, the jockey is on the horse but where is his helmet?
