KINGSTON, Jamaica – Sensational Soul, a chestnut colt by Soul Warrior out of Red Gold conquered a fellow cohort of three-year-old colts and geldings with a rampaging run-on effort to clinch victory in the Classic 2000 Guineas on Sunday, June 2025.
Trained by Gary Subratie and ridden by Shane Ellis in “ride-and-teach mode”, Sensational Soul is headed to the next Classic on the racing agenda, the 10–furlong, Jamaica St Leger in July.
Subratie, although winning his third 2000 Guineas, following victories with Big Man Boyu in 2011, and Wow Wow in 2020, was particularly pleased with the performance of Sensational Soul.
“Sensational Soul is an interesting horse. He is not one to produce fast or exciting gallops at morning exercise. He loves to do things his way, so early in his career, especially as he prepared for the 2000.
“One thing about Sensational Soul which is part of his routine at the stables is one part of his eating habit. After he gallops at exercise or after a race, when he returns to his stall and gets his feed, he devours it (his feed), like there is no tomorrow,” a smiling Subratie shared with this website.
As to what happens next for Sensational Soul, Subratie was clear.
“Sensational Soul will return to the track on Wednesday morning, and then in terms of preparation, he will get more of the same. I will allow him to do what he wants, all the time making sure that he is ok, and of course, healthy.
“He returned after the 2000 in order, there were no issues.
“The one thing I am sure about is that Sensational Soul will get better and better the longer he races. He will have to learn racing around two turns, but that should not be an issue,” Subratie said.
Commenting what many consider to be a slow time for a mile of 1:42.3 especially when pitted against the 1:41.3 run by the filly Burning Hedge, 24 hours earlier in the 1000 Guineas, Subratie was not perturbed.
“There is a popular saying that… “time only matters when you are in prison”. Again, I stress, that the longer he goes, the better Sensational Soul will run.
“Plus, it is not often that a filly can beat a colt, especially going long, and the St Leger is ten furlongs. Yet, I am not leaving anything to chance. Sensational Soul will be prepared the best I can, and we will see,” Subratie said.
