KINGSTON, Jamaica - The top-ranking class contest on Saturday's (April 16) programme, the first of three consecutive days of racing, is an Overnight Allowance call over the two turns of nine furlongs and 25 yards. Eight runners have been entered in what is the Jamaica Racehorse Owners’ Association Trophy.
From this list of eight starters, Acero, Tomohawk, and Chinamax are ruled out as having little or no chance of winning.
That leaves Sentient, Supreme Soul, Raw Liquid, Roy Rogers, and Hover Craft.
Raw Liquid returns to Overnight after winning in $1 million claiming 28 days ago. This six-year-old bay horse has been racing mostly at the sprinting distances but his claiming victory saw a stepping up to seven furlongs. It is better to wait to see how well Raw Liquid will cope going this long.
Old-timer Hover Craft at 12-years has a chance of winning but with toil, wear and tear accumulated after 100 starts, this loyal member of the DaCosta stables, will have to go beyond himself against younger rivals.
Roy Rogers got valuable track time in his seasonal debut 13 days ago. That was over five furlongs straight, a trip Roy Rogers is not effective at. The distance of nine furlongs and 25 yards is more to the liking of Roy Rogers who will use his front-end speed to make a winning bid. For Roy Rogers, it is a case of catch me if you can. Roy Rogers races with the figure 8 on.
Sentient is yet to find the form he is known for in 2022. This six-year,-old however, gave a glimpse of his old self when racing for the second time over a mile, finishing third behind stablemate Crimson and Supreme Soul. Sentient and also Supreme Soul meet again at around the same handicaps, with the latter preferring the two turns on offer. Sentient, if his back class comes into play is quite capable of winning.
Supreme Soul suddenly came to life on March 27, when finishing second to former stablemate Crimson over one mile. Supreme Soul is better suited to this distance and with his well-being exposed, could win his first race in a while. To win, Supreme Soul must return to the Supreme Soul of old.
