IMPORTATION OF RACE HORSES TO JAMAICA

Listed below are the recommended steps to be taken when importing a racehorse to Jamaica.

STEP 1 – MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE (VETERINARY SERVICES DIVISION)

  1. Apply to the Ministry of Agriculture’s Veterinary Division for an importation permit and make quarantine arrangements. Review website: - Ministry of Agriculture –for specific requirements. (Link: moa.gov.jm)
  2. Maintain contact with your broker/agent and the Veterinary Division of the Ministry of Agriculture so as to arrange shipment of the horse(s).

STEP 2 – JAMAICA RACING COMMISSION (JRC) REGISTRATION DEPARTMENT

Apply to the Stud Book Authority (in the country of export) for the Exportation Certificate (Application forms are available at the Jamaica Racing Commission’s office). The Exportation Certificate will be forwarded directly to the Jamaica Racing Commission upon satisfying the requirements. This should be done six (6) weeks before arrival of horse in Jamaica.

NOTE: In addition to the Exportation Certificate and other documents required for the registration of an importee, where the importee is an in-foal mare, the importer/owner must submit to the Jamaica Racing Commission, a Stallion Certificate (completed by the stallion owner/authorized agent) for the purpose of eventually registering the expected foal.

NOTE: Only Ten (10) imported geldings (4y-0 and under) will be approved for racing annually. Importers are advised to consult with the JRC Registration Department on the eligibility of imported gelding to race PRIOR to importing a gelding(s).

Rule 109. of the racing rules is hereby amended as follows: -(a) Where there is a need for additional racing stock the Commission may allow for no more than 10 imported geldings, no older than 4 years on arrival, for racing in a designated calendar year. All prospective owners must receive a special approval from the Board of Commissioners.

àUpon receipt of the Exportation Certificate, the Commission will notify the owner, who is then required to: (SEE STEP 4)

STEP 3 – JRC VETERINARY DEPARTMENT/ SVREL CAYMANAS PARK

à  Submit to the JRC Seventy-two (72) hours prior to intended date of entrance to Caymanas Park.

  1. i) Export health certificate

-           ii) Vaccination record and testing records

-           iii) Completed Entrance Permit

à Apply to the Racing Office for stalls (if required)

  • When all documents are revised and approved an ‘Entrance Permit’ will be issued allowing entry to Caymanas Park. Approval will require sign-off by the JRC and SVREL

STEP 4 – JRC REGISTRATION DEPARTMENT

  • Submit to the JRC REGISTRATION DEPARTMENT the following:

-The Thoroughbred Registration Form for each horse (Blue card), completed by a locally registered Veterinarian who is neither the breeder nor the owner of the horse.

- requisite fee for registration, which is inclusive of the DNA-typing fee.

-completed DNA-typing application form. 

STEP 5 – JRC VETERINARY DEPARTMENT

àContact the JRC’s Veterinary Department for hair sampling, markings verification, microchipping, and vaccination advice/ appointments.
